I was born in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In 2001, I graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Victoria.
As an intern, during the dot-com mania, I bought my first stock based on a tip from a co-worker. Unlike most people during that time, however, I did not have beginner’s luck. I lost everything. Although it was just a few hundred dollars, that was a lot for me at the time! I took my losses and decided to learn more about the market. After reading an article about profiting from distressed companies and bankruptcies, Lady Luck once again gave me an opportunity: Laidlaw. The media said the company was going bankrupt and at $2, I thought I was getting an incredible “bargain”. After all, how could one of the biggest transportation companies possibly go bankrupt? Needless to say, I lost everything again. It was then that I realized the market is a tough game that needed intense study. I swore to myself not to buy another stock until I knew what I was doing. This meant reading everything I could get my hands on – books, newspapers, magazines, websites - you name it. Two years later I bought my third stock but this time made 50%.
Perhaps those two losses were the best thing that could have happened to me. I learned early not to listen to tips and to always analyze the numbers. This has served me well ever since.
Currently, I work as a Software Developer in Vancouver, Canada. I manage my own portfolio and a small hedge fund. My spare time is spent developing financial software and, of course, researching stocks.
